Italy- Mussolini wanted a Greater Italian empire

- decided to begin with a rematch against Ethiopia

1935- Italian forces invaded Ethiopia

- used airplanes and poison gas- easily defeated the Ethiopians, drove Emperor Haile Selassie out

League of Nations- placed economic sanctions on Italy- not supposed to trade some things

- no effect, League effectively did nothing
